A Venetian tale

written by Lola Famuyiwa

Many moons ago I had the opportunity to visit Venice, Italy. Known for its labyrinthine waterways, this floating city is a popular tourist destination. My travel party arrived at the historic heart of the city, the Piazza San Marco (St Mark’s Square), which is next to the Doge Palace and the Basilica di San Marco (St. Mark’s Basilica). There were pigeons everywhere, and you were allowed to feed them. Venice is made up of six sestieri (districts): San Marco, Cannaregio, Castello, Dorsoduro, San Polo and Santa Croce; for this trip I spent the entire day in San Marco. Venice is also home to the best glass blowers in the world. Our first stop was at a glass blowing factory to watch a free demonstration. In a few minutes I watch the glass artisan make a horse right before my eyes! After the demonstration, I spend the rest of the afternoon getting lost in the alleyways. There were loads of souvenir shops filled with beautiful Murano glass and enchanting Venetian Masks. I bought a beautiful pendant of a mask as my keepsake. Arrivederci!
